Police and fire pensions

Taxpayers are responsible for paying defined-benefit pension plans even if investments on the pension funds don't make enough money. The city broke out the property tax amount for the police and fire pensions separately for the first time last year in order to be more transparent, said Brandon Kauffman, city finance director. 

Tax rate: $0.03466 per $100 taxable value 

A 31-year-old Columbus was killed Friday in a one-vehicle accident a few miles west of North Bend, according to a press release from the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office.

Jacob W. Schamp, released information shows, was ejected from his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by law enforcement. The accident occurred at about 12:40 a.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 30 near County Road 2.

An investigation determined that a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Schamp was traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 30 when the SUV went off the right (south) side of the highway and rolled, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Schamp was reportedly not wearing a seat belt and speed is being considered a factor in the accident, the sheriff's office said.
