Laura Strimple has been appointed chief of staff for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, Director Scott Frakes announced Friday.

Strimple will oversee research, communications, records, policy development and accreditation. She has served as communications director since joining the department in June. She fills the vacancy left by Dawn-Renee Smith, who recently was promoted from chief of staff to deputy director for programs at the Department of Corrections.

Prior to joining the department, Strimple was the assistant secretary of state. In addition to managing several divisions for that office, she also served as interim deputy for elections and oversaw special projects.

Strimple began her career in broadcasting and worked in both Lincoln and Omaha for more than 15 years as a news producer.
