OMAHA — Omaha Police Chief Thomas Warren is stepping down to take an executive-level position that he describes as his dream job.

Warren says he can’t disclose more details about his new job, other than to say it will keep him in Omaha. He says an announcement will be made soon detailing the new job.

Warren made the announcement this morning at a news conference.

Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey says city officials will conduct a search for a new chief over next several months.

Fahey has named Eric Buske as the interim chief. Buske is 23-year department veteran who most recently served as the police commander at the scene of Omaha’s mall shooting, in which nine people died last month.

Warren has been chief of police since late 2003, when he became the city’s first black police chief.
