Rep. Jeff Fortenberry said Monday's meeting between President Donald Trump and the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore could lead to a positive future in relations between the countries.

“President Trump’s move towards engagement with North Korea is historic, bold, and would have been unimaginable — just months ago — given the heightened threat environment from North Korea,” the Nebraska Republican said.

“Today’s joint Trump-Kim statement, if fully realized, lays the foundation for a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, a dramatically new and constructive era in U.S.-North Korea relations, and a peaceful and prosperous future for the North and South Korean people.”

Fortenberry serves on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations.
