Sen. Deb Fischer, Judge Brett Kavanaugh

Sen. Deb Fischer meets with Judge Brett Kavanaugh, the nominee to serve as the next justice on the Supreme Court.

Sens. Deb Fischer and Ben Sasse met separately Thursday with Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump's nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, and both expressed solid support for his confirmation by the Senate.

"During our meeting today, I asked Judge Kavanaugh several questions about his record and his constitutional interpretation," Fischer said. "I was impressed with his talented legal mind, judicial temperament and commitment to the rule of law."

Kavanaugh is "an excellent choice," Fischer said.

"The judge I met today doesn't sound anything like the imaginary bogeyman that Democrats are railing against," Sasse said.

"I think Nebraskans are going to like this humble judge who is clearly most proud of his two daughters," he said.

"Judge Kavanaugh is a serious thinker and a careful jurist who understands that our system of checks and balances and our First Amendment freedoms make America great."

Sasse is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will hold hearings on the nomination.
