A fire that has burned thousands of acres in the northern Panhandle is reported to be 50% contained.

An update Monday morning showed significant progress from Sunday, when the fire was reported to be 15% contained.

Preevacuation notices for the community of Crawford were removed in some cases as conditions improved. More than 160 firefighters are battling the blaze.

Gov. Pete Ricketts issued an emergency declaration in support of response efforts to the fire south of Crawford and a separate wildfire fully contained southwest of Scottsbluff.
