Ruby Beckmann, 86, of Columbus, went to be with Jesus on Monday, September 10, 2018, at Columbus Care & Rehabilitation Center in Columbus. Ruby Louise Beckmann was born July 4, 1932, in Ashland, to Marion and Mildred “Irene” (Williams) Kellogg. She was baptized at Alvo Methodist Church on April 17, 1938, in Ashland. Ruby had her first teaching experience with Sunday School in Alvo. She graduated from Alvo High School and then attended Lincoln School of Commerce in Lincoln.
While attending college in Lincoln, Ruby met Vernon Beckmann. The couple were united in marriage on April 23, 1954, at Ashland Methodist Church. Ruby and Vernon moved to Columbus, where Vernon was employed by Nebraska Public Power System. Ruby worked at the Columbus Public Library, then branched out from there to Platte Valley Literacy program, where she worked with English Language Learners. She also taught Sunday School at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Ruby and Vernon hosted two AFS students, Raphael from Belgium and Gudron from Germany.
At retirement, Vernon and Ruby were able to do a lot of traveling. Ruby took on many knitting projects, including mittens for many Immanuel Lutheran kindergarten classes. She enjoyed many years of golfing at both Van Berg and Elks Country Club. Ruby was active in LWML, Altar Guild, and the American Legion Auxiliary. In 2004, Ruby was awarded the Service to Mankind Award from Columbus Sertoma Club.
Ruby is survived by: husband; Vernon Beckmann of Columbus, son; Stanley Beckmann of Woodridge, Ill., daughter; Patricia Huber of Beaverton, Ore, daughter; Jane (Cecil) Grant of Lincoln, grandson; Cameron Huber of San Francisco, Calif., sister; Eleanor (Larry) Fenton of Lincoln, sister-in-law; Arlene (John J.) Seevers of Seward, sister-in-law; Marge Meyer of Plymouth, Wis., nieces and nephews. Ruby was preceded in death by: parents; Marion and Irene Kellogg, brother; Robert Kellogg, sister; Marilyn Vosler
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Patrick Sparling and Rev. Christopher Ramstad officiating. Private family interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church.
