Margaret Marie (Helget) Small was born June 10, 1945, to Gerald and Marie Helget in Alexandria and raised up to heaven April 16, 2019. She grew up on the family farm by Alexandria and attended Sacred Heart Catholic Grade School and Hebron High School. She moved to Lincoln in 1963 and worked at Lincoln Telephone Company/Lincoln Cellular for 40 years. Upon retirement, she enjoyed working part time at Campbell's Nursery.
Margaret married Larry Small on May 26, 1973, and they lived in Lincoln their whole life. Margaret was a competitor and loved sports, playing tennis, golf, softball, volleyball and was also a bowler. She was a master gardener and used her talent, along with Larry, to achieve a beautiful yard and garden at their home. She also had a fondness for dogs, especially their standard poodles, Chas and Emma.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, staff associate for the Woods Charitable Fund Inc; past president of the Frank H. Woods Telephone Pioneer Association, secretary/treasurer and lifetime member of the Frank H. Woods Pioneer Museum, lifetime member of ITPA, board member of Alzheimer's Association of the Great Plains, Friends of the Lied-Legends, member of the Lincoln Women's Golf Association, Iron Horse Ladies Golf Association, Tennis Buddies and Random Acts of Kindness Group.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister-in-law, Sharon Helget and brother-in-law, Eugene Werner. Those left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband, Larry, brothers, Bob (Nancy), Gene (Liz), sisters, Mary (Tom) Wright and Elaine Werner, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Susan Small, as well as nieces, nephews and a host of friends who will all miss her humor and beautiful smile every day.
Margaret dealt with her pancreatic cancer the same way she lived her life, with strength, dignity, and grace and always threw in a big smile.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church (7900 Trendwood Drive) in Lincoln. A rosary will be recited at 9 a.m. on Tuesday also at the church. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Lincoln Memorial Park, please gather at Gate 2. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been suggested to the family or a charity of your choice.
