The city Public Works and Utilities Department announced $40,000 in grant funding is available for projects or programs serving Lincoln and Lancaster County that reduce the amount of solid waste material taken to the landfill.

Nonprofit organizations, schools, political jurisdictions and businesses are eligible to apply. Applications are due Sept. 30, and information is available at lincoln.ne.gov (keyword: recycling grant). The grants are for projects or programs that begin in January 2016.

Grants totaling $40,100 were awarded to three organizations for 2015, the first year of the program:

* Lincoln Public Schools received $13,100 to expand its pilot organic waste collection and composting program to nine elementary schools.

* EcoStores Nebraska received $20,000 to work with five contractors and property owners to divert construction waste from the landfill and develop best management practices for construction and demolition waste.

* WasteCap Nebraska received $7,000 to develop a pilot restaurant recycling project in downtown Lincoln.
