Police release video of man stealing girl's gift for grandfather from fair

Police have released the video taken of a man who stole a young girl's prize-winning pickup model from a display at the Lancaster County Super Fair last week.

Video surveillance appears to show a man in his 50s walking away with it.

Allison Morrow made headlines last week — and won a purple ribbon at the Lancaster County Super Fair — for her diorama depicting the Lincoln driver who sunk his Civic in wet concrete.

But another model she built meant more.

The 11-year-old spent 12 hours replicating the 1978 Ford pickup her grandfather bought new in Tekamah, and that her father still drives. This was her first glue-together model, and she used a paint gun at her father’s body shop to recreate the truck’s two-tone blue-and-silver exterior.

Her efforts earned her another purple ribbon, and a 4-H certificate naming it the fair’s top model exhibit.

She planned to surprise her grandfather with the pickup after the fair.

Now she can’t. A week ago Friday, the day after the fair opened, the truck disappeared from the Lancaster Event Center’s Lincoln Room.

“They said the guy knew exactly what he was going for. He wasn’t shopping around. They said he made a beeline for it — walked up and grabbed it and walked away and stuck it in a bag,” said Dan Morrow, Allison’s father.

Earlier this week, Morrow hadn’t seen the video, but he heard it captured clear images of the thief. “The reason I’m not fuming right now is I’m confident they’re going to catch him. I want to see what kind of person does that.”

But if they don’t get the Ford, Allison will build another, he said.

His daughter was upset, but she didn’t come unglued.

“What she said, after they found it happened, was, ‘Well, it was just so good they had to steal it.’”
