Q&A with Lincoln mayoral candidates

Q&A with Lincoln mayoral candidates

For the first time in 12 years, voters will pick a new mayor this spring.

In the November election, Lincolnites approved limiting the mayor to three terms, effectively ending Mayor Chris Beutler’s plan to run for a fourth term.

Cyndi Lamm and Leirion Gaylor Baird are City Council members.

Lincoln has a strong mayor form of government, meaning the mayor is its top administrator with an office at City Hall where he or she is expected to work full time.

The mayor, who earns around $89,300 a year, oversees city government, with about 2,500 employees and a $589 million budget. He appoints the heads of more than a dozen departments.

Though city offices are elected on a nonpartisan basis, with no party label on the ballot, the parties are very interested in the mayor’s race and often help recruit and support candidates.
