Nancy Hicks reports on Lincoln city government, but she’s been following the leaders of local and state government for more than 40 years.

The Lincoln City Council recently approved the salary for the future mayor, whoever takes office in the spring of 2019.

The council continued the mayor's current salary plan, which provides an annual cost-of-living increase based on the U.S. Consumer Price Index capped at 5 percent.

Chris Beutler's salary is $87,128.86.

The mayor can also participate in the city’s health insurance program and gets another 6 percent of the salary as a contribution to a retirement plan, a 401(k)-type plan with no guaranteed monthly benefit.

Salaries for City Council members and the mayor must be set the year before any election in an effort to separate the salaries from the individuals currently holding office.

Council members make $24,000 a year, a salary that has not been raised since 2005.
