Try 3 months for $3

Today’s older adults have interests that go far beyond bingo.

That was abundantly clear when a candidate for public office, responding to a question of how the city could better serve today’s seniors, said at a recent meeting: “Well, the elderly like bingo ...”

That remark elicited an unfavorable response by about three-fourths of the older adults at the meeting, attested community activist Rachel Trevizo.

Bingo is still a pleasant diversion for some, but it was at that point that Trevizo decided that a future forum of candidates was needed to focus solely on the needs and interests of today’s older adults.

As a result, Trevizo has announced a forum from 1:30 to 3 p.m. next Saturday, March 16, in the meeting room of the Union Bank & Trust location at 4731 Calvert St. The forum will allow Lincoln’s mayoral candidates to respond to pre-determined questions and to field queries from the audience.

The range of questions posed to the candidates is likely to include transportation issues for immobile residents on limited incomes, and how the city can help older folks and veterans gain affordable access to social and entertainment opportunities.

In a phone interview Tuesday, Trevizo said commitments to attend the March 16 forum had been received from three mayoral candidates: city attorney Jeff Kirkpatrick, and Lincoln City Council members Cyndi Lamm and Leirion Gaylor Baird.

Andy Ringsmuth and Krystal Gabel are also running to fill the mayor’s office, which will be vacated by Chris Beutler. The forum is free and open to the public.

Trevizo, a retiree who worked 44 years for the federal government, said a second forum – which would allow Lincoln City Council candidates to address issues affecting older adults – may be scheduled prior to the April 9 primary.

The general election is May 7.
