Girls Inc. has hired Maura Penas to lead its Lincoln expansion, which began in 2018.
“We are excited about providing mentoring adults, research-based curriculum, and an all-girl, pro-girl environment for more girls in Nebraska,” said Roberta Wilhelm, executive director of Girls Inc. of Omaha.
“Maura is the right person to help establish a strong foundation in Lincoln. She has both a passion for the mission of inspiring all girls to be ‘strong, smart, and bold’ and she has deep ties in the Lincoln community.”
Girls Inc. began serving the Lincoln community in 2018 with 28 girls participating in the Eureka! program, which combines intensive summer camp experiences in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) with school-year seminars, field trips, speakers, and activities.
The program is produced in partnership with the YWCA of Lincoln and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This year, another group of 30 girls will join the program.
Girls Inc. of Lincoln plans to launch after-school programming this fall, and with support from a grant from the Girls Inc. national office, plans to establish a sustainable presence in Lincoln by the end of the three-year grant period.
