Pitch, Hit & Run #2

Macy Richardson poses with her trophy after winning the national Pitch, Hit & Run championship in 2013.

Madison Shaw is looking to follow in the footsteps of another small-town Nebraska girl.

Madison, an 8-year-old from Edgar, is one of at least two Nebraskans set to compete next week in the national Pitch, Hit & Run contest, baseball's equivalent to football's Punt, Pass & Kick competition.

From more than 600,000 contestants who tried their hand in local contests, 24 participants in four age brackets for boys and girls earned the chance to compete in the finals at Nationals Park, site of this year's Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Another Nebraskan, Macy Richardson of Tecumseh, qualified in the 13-14 age division. Macy is a multi-time national champion in the event.

All qualifiers earn an expense-paid trip to compete and attend MLB All-Star Week festivities, including the chance to shag fly balls during the nationally televised Home Run Derby.

Madison's path to being a national finalist included winning her local competition in Sutton in April, the sectional competition in Grand Island in May and her age bracket at a Colorado Rockies game June 24.

The top 24 finishers from all of the team competitions were invited to participate in the finals.

"Everybody was excited," said Madison's father, Darren Shaw. "She's been working hard all summer. She had so much fun in Colorado and is excited to play in a major-league stadium."

Richardson qualified at a Kansas City Royals game.

Pitch, Hit & Run competition involves participants tossing six pitches to fill the strike zone, taking three swings off a tee to drive balls as far as they can and as close to dead-center field as possible, and one run from second base to home to show their speed.

Madison Shaw has been playing on an 8-and-under softball team for three years. When asked about what she's most excited for, she said "getting to play on the big field" and "seeing the White House."

Madison is attending the competition with her parents, who also coach her softball team, along with her brothers and grandparents.
