The University of Nebraska-Lincoln was named one of America's 500 Best Employers by Forbes on its 2018 ranking, one of 17 institutions of higher education named to the list.
Ranking No. 115 on the list published in May, UNL is one of five Nebraska employers identified by Forbes as one of the best places to work.
More than 30,000 U.S. employees at companies or institutions of more than 1,000 employees across 25 different industry sectors were surveyed for the Forbes list.
They were asked to rate their willingness to recommend their own employers to friends and family, as well as evaluate other employers in their respective industries, according to Forbes' methodology.
Employees were also asked 35 questions about their working conditions, salary, potential for development, as well as for the image of their current employer on a 5-point scale.
UNL was one of three Big Ten Conference universities on the list, rannking behind Michigan State but ahead of Minnesota. It was ranked as the 10th-best university among those polled.
The university system's flagship campus was also the second-ranked Nebraska employer on the list.
Omaha-based HDR was named No. 24, Kiewit was ranked No. 285 and Union Pacific No. 382 on the list of employers with more than 1,000 employees, while Lincoln-based Crete Carrier Corp. was slotted at No. 293 on the Forbes list.
UNL offers an employee-assistance program, scholarships to employees and dependents, university child care, wellness programs and flexible work-life balance, the university system said. It also is self-insured, and has increased health insurance premiums just twice since 2009.
"I could not be prouder to call them colleagues, and I'm thrilled that they see so much value in what we do as a university and in the university as an employer," Chancellor Ronnie Green said.
