Michaela Bunz, daughter of Tamara and Brent Bunz, is an eighth-grader at St. Joseph School. “Michaela is a positive role model and leader in the classroom,” school officials wrote. “She is a hard worker and a friend to all students.” Michaela is a straight-A honor roll student. She is active in two 4-H clubs and has volunteered at Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach. In sports, she participates in soccer, basketball, swimming, cross country and tennis. Her religious activities include singing in the school choir. Her hobbies and outside interests include showing horses at various local shows and at the Lancaster County Fair, Nebraska State Fair and Aksarben.
Gerardo Camacena Cuevas, son of Lourdes Cuevas Morales and Sergio Camacena Zorrilla, is a seventh-grader at Pound Middle School. “Gerardo is a great student with excellent work habits, and his work is done in the highest quality,” school officials wrote. “He is kind and caring to everyone. Teachers have always had good comments about him ever since he attended Zeman Elementary School.” Gerardo is an honor roll student who has received an excellence referral. He enjoys playing soccer and likes to draw, look at stars at night, watch movies, play video games and read. As a Jehovah’s Witness, he likes to preach about his beliefs.
Gibsen Chapman, daughter of Nancy and Ed Chapman, is a seventh-grader at Irving Middle School. “Gibsen greets everyone with a smile and is eager to know how she can help others,” school officials wrote. “She is a natural leader who has a very bright future.” Gibsen is a member of the Student Council and Irving Ambassadors. She has volunteered five years for the Sheridan Elementary summer reading program and also volunteered for the City Council campaign. She plays for the Nebraska 12s tennis team and competed at the USTA Missouri Valley Tournament. She also enjoys singing, playing clarinet and bass clarinet, reading and creative writing.
Drew Welch, son of Kati Mahalek and Andy Welch, is a sixth-grader at Lux Middle School. Drew was nominated for his outstanding effort and achievement in all of his classes, and for his kind and caring behavior toward peers and teachers. His awards and recognitions include being selected for the Lincoln Leaders program and spending a day at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is active in youth group at Citylight Lincoln Church. Drew enjoys playing basketball and for a soccer team that went undefeated last year. He also likes to stay busy during the summer with activities including water sports.
