A food company marketing "better-for-you" salt products will open its research and development office at Nebraska Innovation Campus, the research park said Tuesday.
NuTek Food Science, which reduces sodium in food by as much as 75 percent by replacing it with potassium salt, chose to expand its existing relationship with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Food Processing Center, NuTek President Brian Boor said.
"For many years, NuTek Food Science has worked closely with the world-class UNL food pilot plant and product development labs for testing purposes," Boor said in a news release.
The company's two products -- NuTek Salt and Salt for Life -- are made for food manufacturers and restaurants and consumers, respectively.
NuTek, which has offices in Omaha, Minneapolis and Washington D.C., will become the sixth private company to lease space in the research park at the former State Fair Park.
NuTek Food Science was founded by Tom Manuel and Sam Rao in Omaha. Manuel and Rao have worked together in the food industry for over 30 years, according to NuTek's website. Rao is listed among the adjunct faculty in the UNL Food Science and Technology Department.
ConAgra Foods was announced as the first Innovation Campus partner in 2012. Three more companies -- Quantified Ag, Hastings HVAC and Echo Canyon Services -- announced intentions to move to Innovation Campus in February.
They were followed by Suji's Cuisine, a Korean food manufacturer that will develop new strategies to manufacture on a large scale all-natural, gluten-free ingredients also free of MSG.
The companies join UNL's Food Science and Technology Department on the campus.
Rolando Flores, head of the food science department and director of the Food Processing Center, said NuTek's work falls in line with UNL's goals for the new pilot labs set to open in the Food Innovation Center.
