The Lincoln Lutheran Middle School eighth-grade boys basketball team won the National Consolation Championship, and the school's girls team finished 11th March 29-31 in the Lutheran Basketball National Tournament in Valparaiso, Indiana.
The boys tournament consisted of 32 qualifying teams representing 15 states. The boys played six games in three days and returned home with a 5-1 record and the Consolation Championship (ninth place overall). The five victories were the most ever by a Nebraska team in the national tournament.
In game five, the Warriors used their defense to come away with a 41-15 victory over 2017 National Champion St. Michael from Fort Myers, Florida. That victory earned the Warriors a spot in the Consolation Bracket Championship against Faith Lutheran of Las Vegas. In their final game, the Warriors steadily pulled away for a 38-21 victory.
For the tournament, Jonny Puelz scored 54 points and Garret Hoefs led the Warriors with 62 points while defensively guarding the opposing team’s top player. For his efforts, Garret was named to the 10-person All-Tournament Team.
The Warriors finished their season 16-2. Team members were Puelz, Hoefs, Gabe Schmidt, Logan DeBoer, Will Jurgens, Ethan Ringler, Cooper May, Jameson Pella, Bo Claridge and Jackson Masek.
For the third time in school history, the Lady Warriors Middle School basketball team participated in the Lutheran Basketball National Tournament. The Warriors relied on strong defense, forcing an average of 26 turnovers per game to finish the tournament with a 3-2 record, capturing 11th place out of 32 teams from across the U.S.
The Warriors were led in tournament scoring by Abby Wachal (69) and Jami Wahl (31). Wachal was selected as one of the 10 All-Tournament Team members. All 12 team members scored in at least one of the five games at nationals.
The Lady Warriors finished their season at 14-2. Team members included Hattie Bennett, Breanne Blair, Hailey Chambers, Jordan Ernstmeyer, Elise Huscher, Elsa Meyer, Taylor Streich, Harper Stull, Abby Wachal, Jamison Wahl, Chloe Waldo and Erika Young.
