Investigators allege a 17-year-old Lincoln father head-butted his crying 2-month-old baby, who was later hospitalized with a brain bleed, according to court documents.

Lincoln police arrested Treyvonn Ironshell in the case Tuesday and took him to the Lancaster County youth detention center.

Prosecutors charged him Wednesday with intentional child abuse resulting in injury, a felony punishable by up to 50 years imprisonment.

The baby girl's mother took her to a Lincoln clinic Jan. 22, concerned she was crying and sluggish, police said in a juvenile court filing.

Staff there didn't see any physical injuries but referred the mother to Bryan East Campus.

Her daughter was admitted overnight there after a spinal tap indicated bleeding, police said.

The next day she was transferred to Nebraska Medicine because doctors determined the bleeding was on her brain, an affidavit for Ironshell's arrest said.

Surgeons removed the fluid on the girl's brain.

Police believe that earlier in January, Ironshell, angry over having to get up early to watch the girl, head-butted her, the affidavit said.

The girl's forehead was bruised from eyebrow to eyebrow at the time.

Investigators also believe he had previously shaken his baby's head.

Ironshell, who turns 18 in June, appeared in Lancaster County Court on Wednesday.

The Public Defender's Office was appointed to represent him, and a judge ordered him not to contact his daughter or any other child younger than 6.

The state took the girl into protective custody, according to court records.
