A 58-year-old prison inmate, Whitney Hopkins, died at a Lincoln hospital shortly after 11 a.m. Monday, the Nebraska Department of Corrections has confirmed.
Spokeswoman Laura Strimple said while the cause of Hopkins' death has not been determined, he was being treated for a medical condition.
Hopkins, who was sentenced to prison in December, had been assigned to the Nebraska State Penitentiary but was moved to the Diagnostic and Evaluation Center on April 10.

Strimple said he was taken by a state vehicle to the hospital Monday morning because of a medical issue.
Hopkins was serving a nine-year sentence out of Gage County for possession and distribution of methamphetamine, child abuse and tampering with a witness.
As is the case whenever an inmate dies in custody, a grand jury will conduct an investigation.
