Shooting Investigation 4.14

Police work Sunday to investigate shootings on the 2300 block of Southwest 18th Street.

Police say the woman critically injury in a double shooting Saturday night in a West A neighborhood home has died.

Rachel Garten, 54, succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head, Lincoln Police Capt. Robert Farber said.

Police and first responders were called just before 11 p.m. April 13 to a house near West South Street and Coddington Avenue on a report of a woman with a head injury, according to a Lincoln Police Department news release.

When they arrived, two officers were taken inside by the woman's mother-in-law, who had called 911.

When the officers entered, Eric Garten, 58, shot and killed himself with a handgun, police said.

The injured woman, Rachel Garten, 54, was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Chief Jeff Bliemeister identified the Gartens on Monday and said police have were looking at phone records in an attempt to determine whether both shootings were self-inflicted.

Police said no shots were fired by officers, and there was no ongoing threat to the public's safety.

A grand jury will review the case, as state law requires any time a person dies in custody or while being apprehended.
