A Lincoln woman was able to use a garden hose to put out a fire started by someone behind her University Place home, but not before it caused $10,000 in damage, police say.

Officer Angela Sands said the fire is being investigated as an arson and happened just after 7:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 4600 block of Gladstone Street.

Two adults and four children, ranging in age from 9 to 13, were in the home when a neighbor noticed a cloud of smoke coming from behind the house and contacted them and called 911.

By the time Lincoln firefighters arrived, the fire was out, Sands said. But, she said, it was quickly determined that the fire had been started by someone outside the home. The fire had been close to spreading when it was discovered.

Police are asking for help from anyone who lives in the area who may have video of people who were coming and going from the area around that time Tuesday morning.
