A man involved in a three-vehicle accident Saturday night in southwest Lincoln that sent five people to the hospital has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Justin Kowalewski, 32, was arrested and booked in the Lancaster County Jail after a preliminary test measured his blood-alcohol content at 0.165 percent, more than 2 times the legal limit to drive. Kowalewski was also ticketed for possession of an open alcohol container in a vehicle, possession of marijuana less than 1 ounce and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to jail records.
Rescue crews were dispatched just before 6 p.m. Saturday to the 3200 block of West Van Dorn Street on a reported collision involving two pickups and a Ford Focus. The Ford Focus and one of the pickups slid into a ditch on the side of the road.
Lincoln Fire and Rescue acting Battalion Chief Ron Trouba said that when rescuers arrived, they had to extricate five people who were trapped in the Ford Focus. There were two adults and three children, and all five were transported to Bryan West Campus.
The three children were all treated for minor injuries, according to Lincoln police, while the two adults were in serious condition. Trouba said none of the injuries were life-threatening.
Further details of the accident, including which vehicle Kowalewski was driving and the identities of the five patients, hadn't been released as of Sunday evening.
