Lincoln police arrested a 30-year-old man early Wednesday after a brief pursuit near the Capitol of a driver in a stolen car.

Capt. Jake Dilsaver said a police dog helped them track Damingo Burks, who they found hiding in a stairwell to an apartment building a short distance away.

Dilsaver said police found several shotgun ammunition rounds in the vehicle that they originally tried to stop in the area of Goodhue Boulevard and E Street. He said the driver, Burks, fled briefly and then parked abruptly and ran.

When they found him in the 1300 block of F Street, Burks had a shotgun round in his pocket and a sawed-off short shotgun near him, Dilsaver said. He said Burks had a makeshift holster for it on his leg, and there was a live round in the shotgun.

Dilsaver said the vehicle had been reported stolen in Omaha.

Police arrested Burks on a federal arrest warrant and on suspicion of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of a short shotgun, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest and theft by receiving stolen property.

Two other people in the vehicle were interviewed and released.
