Former Husker defensive end Cameron Meredith allegedly broke a 20-year-old man’s jaw and eye socket during a brawl last month, Lincoln police said.
Officers cited Meredith, 23, on suspicion of misdemeanor assault. He is out of town, so investigators interviewed him over the phone and let him know he's due in court Aug. 8, Officer Katie Flood said.
Witnesses told police Meredith and his friends were waiting to get into an apartment complex in the alley between 13th to 14th and P and Q streets at about 2 a.m. June 16, Flood said.
People on the roof yelled obscene comments down at them and threw things at them, she said.
The group from upstairs eventually went down to the alley, and the two sides started shouting at each other, Flood said.
Then they started to fight.
Witnesses told police Meredith hit the 20-year-old, who was trying to break up the fight.
Police haven’t cited anyone else, but still are interviewing those involved.
The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Meredith, from Huntington Beach, Calif., completed his eligibility last season. He holds the school record for most games played (56).
