Investigators deem an abandoned three-story home a total loss after a fire broke out on the third floor early Friday morning, a fire department spokeswoman said.

The cause of the fire at 1141 D St. was under investigation, but Lincoln Fire Investigator Damon Robbins worried his probe of the blaze might be hindered by the extent of the damage and safety of the building.

At about 3 a.m., LFR was called to 12th and D streets to investigate an odor, Fire Department spokeswoman Nancy Crist said.

The rig arrived, and its crew saw the house on fire, Crist said.

Fire crews searched the basement, first and second floors, but the heavy fire on the third floor compromised their ability to search the top floor, she said.

Still, they contained the blaze to that floor and extinguished it. No one was injured.

Neighbors reported squatters frequent the home, and several transients were kicked out Wednesday afternoon, Crist said.

The home was valued for tax purposes at $212,500.
