Flooding near Plattsmouth, 3.16

Train cars and truck storage cars sit submerged under floodwaters near Plattsmouth in mid-March.

A Norfolk man died Friday night in southwest Iowa after he was caught in floodwaters, according to the Fremont County (Iowa) Sheriff's Office.

Aleido Rojas Galan, 52, was killed after he and two other people tried to drive around a barricade in the town of Riverton, Iowa.

Galan and two other men in their 50s were traveling from Norfolk to Florida to visit family when their vehicle was swept away, Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope said.

All three escaped the vehicle, and crews in a boat found Galan and one of the other men in the water clinging to a tree.

Galan was airlifted to Lincoln but died on the way to the hospital. The other man clinging to the tree is being treated at an Omaha hospital, and the third man was found in a ditch about half a mile away trying to get warm, the sheriff's office said. He is also recovering in an Omaha hospital.

Galan's death is the second confirmed flood-related fatality in the region in the past week. Columbus-area native James Wilke, 50, died Thursday in floodwaters near his Platte County home.
