A rural Nebraska City man died Saturday in a grain bin accident at a farm northeast of Unadilla, Otoe County Sheriff Colin Caudill said in a news release Monday.

The 69-year-old man, identified as Dennis E. Meyer, climbed into the grain bin to clear a jammed auger shortly before 2:45 p.m., the sheriff said.

Another man outside the bin lost contact with him and called 911, Caudill said.

Rescue crews from Syracuse, Dunbar and Unadilla searched the bin, probed into the soybeans inside and ultimately cut open the sides of the bin to find the man. He died at the scene.

The sheriff's office is investigating the accident and an autopsy is pending.
