A 20-year-old Lincoln man accidentally shot and killed himself in a home north of East Campus early Tuesday while messing around with a gun.
Emanuel Zavaleta Hernandez died after the shooting at 2:49 a.m. at an apartment in the 4600 block of Baldwin Avenue, Lincoln Police Officer Katie Flood said.
“He was handling it under the assumption that it was unloaded, and it was not,” she said.
Capt. Martin Fehringer would not say what type of gun was used or what happened before it went off. He said he didn't know whether Hernandez died at the scene or at a hospital.
About 90 minutes earlier, police said, Hernandez was with a group of people involved in an assault on an officer a block away at 46th Street and Huntington Avenue.
The officer was fine, Flood said, but Hector Antonio Lopez, 20, was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer.
In June 2010, police found a bullet hole in the wall Hernandez shared with a neighbor, Flood said. He told officers a man he didn't know had brought over a long gun or rifle that went off accidentally.
Hernandez pleaded guilty in June 2009 to attempted burglary, a felony, and had been barred from having guns. Two years later, he pleaded guilty to having the gun and served seven months in jail.
Brady Wiebeck, 54, has been doing business for 20 years next door to the apartment building in which Hernandez shot himself on Tuesday.
"It's a nice neighborhood," Wiebeck said. "There have been plenty of times I've been here really late working or really early, and I've never had a concern."
