Police on Wednesday warned the public about a scam targeting restaurants that cost a Burger King restaurant in east Lincoln more than $1,300.
Lincoln Police Officer Angela Sands said a 21-year-old employee at the 84th and O streets location was called Tuesday morning by an unknown man claiming to be from the "Federal Bureau."
Because of recent thefts at the restaurant, the caller told the woman that she needed to purchase gift cards with the nightly deposit and send him the codes for those cards, Sands said.
He told her it needed to be done to keep the store open.
The employee followed his instructions, buying the cards at multiple stores, and gave him the numbers from the cards, Sands said.
When officers tried to call the number back, they determined it had been a spoofed phone number, she said.
