Officer Scott Bierle

Lancaster County Sheriff's investigators cited a 26-year-old Lincoln police officer Tuesday with procuring alcohol for his 19-year-old girlfriend.

In a news release Tuesday afternoon, Sheriff Terry Wagner said Scott Bierle since has been placed on modified duty at the Lincoln Police Department and is set to go to court Feb. 13.

Wagner said Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister contacted him Dec. 21, to ask if his office would conduct an investigation into the possibility that a Lincoln police officer had provided alcohol to a minor. He said Lincoln police also conducted their own internal investigation.

Wagner said investigators learned off-duty officers had gathered at a local bar Dec. 16 and, during that gathering, Bierle allegedly bought alcohol for the teenager.

In a separate news release, Bliemeister said the investigation began when Lincoln police officers came forward about a potential criminal violation by a coworker at a Lincoln bar where they have enforcement responsibilities.

Other off-duty officers also were at the bar.

Based on the combination of those factors and past practices, Bliemeister said, he approached the sheriff to investigate.

"The employees that brought the information forward did what is right and what is expected for members of the law enforcement profession," the chief said.

He said the internal affairs investigation began after citations were issued in order to ensure it be kept separate from the criminal investigation.

"The criminal justice system and our internal processes will continue, ultimately determining responsibility for actions in contrast to the mission and values of our agency," Bliemeister said.

Wagner said there was no indication that other officers present were responsible for any criminal violations. They haven't been cited.

He said there also was no indication that the 19-year-old woman was intoxicated or subjected to any unwelcome conduct.

The woman was ticketed for minor in possession of alcohol.

Bierle has been with the Lincoln Police Department since graduating from the training academy in December 2015. He is an officer on the department's Center Team.
