Police and fire pensions

Taxpayers are responsible for paying defined-benefit pension plans even if investments on the pension funds don't make enough money. A Lincoln man is in critical condition after being struck by a race car at Eagle raceway Saturday night.

Racetrack official Tim Kozak was realigning cars after a wreck on the track when a race car clipped him, said Eagle Raceway owner Roger Hadan.

Kozak was thrown from the impact and had to be transported to Bryan West Campus by medical helicopter. He suffered fractured vertebrae in his neck and back along with other injuries.

Hadan said that Kozak told him he was happy the accident happened at the raceway because of their response team. Eagle Raceway has a safety crew that works with local emergency medical technicians during every race.

"This is the first year we put this crew together," Hadan said. "They did the best job they could have possibly have done."

Eagle Raceway is discussing plans for a fundraiser for Kozak during Saturday's races.
