A police officer busted three doughnut thieves as they fled a downtown Lincoln shop with a tray of fresh confections early Sunday, a police spokeswoman said Wednesday.
An employee at Hurts Donuts at Ninth and P streets was setting doughnuts out for the day at 4:30 a.m. when three teenage boys entered the shop and stole a tray of 24 doughnuts, Officer Angela Sands said.
An officer driving south on Ninth Street saw the teens running with the tray, and an employee alerted the officer of their thievery, she said.
As the boys got into a car, the officer stopped them and found one of the doughnuts had a bite taken out of it, Sands said.
Police notified the parents of the three 16-year-olds, whose cases have been referred to the Lancaster County Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
Although most of the donuts were untainted, they were “properly disposed of,” Sands said.
