First responders took a woman to a local hospital after she was hit by a car Tuesday afternoon as she crossed a street in central Lincoln, police said.
The woman, identified as 32-year-old Halley Hansen of Lincoln, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Bryan West Campus, said Lincoln police Capt. Todd Kocian. She remained in critical condition Tuesday night.
Police are investigating what led to the crash.
Hansen had started to cross A Street at Capitol Parkway when she was hit by a Toyota SUV turning east onto A Street, Kocian said.
Gale Younker, who witnessed the crash, said she saw Hansen press the button to change the traffic light.
Younker said the vehicle accelerated while turning, and Hansen had only taken one step before she was hit.
The intersection is one of the more dangerous crossings in Lincoln, Younker said.
"When I see these kids (crossing), I say 'Oh, sweetheart, please wait for the signal,'" Younker said. "And she did."
