A fire that spread from the engine compartment of a 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix damaged as many as 33 vehicles inside a University of Nebraska-Lincoln parking garage Tuesday morning, fire officials say.

The university has asked structural engineers to ensure the garage, at 14th Street and Avery Avenue, is safe following the fire, which was reported shortly before 8 a.m.

A UNL fire inspector determined the fire, which was on the garage's third floor, caused extensive damage to three vehicles, with additional damage to as many as 30 vehicles, according to Nancy Crist, spokeswoman for Lincoln Fire and Rescue.

The fire also prompted a campus alert to UNL students and staff.
