Inmate Dennis Shupe died Wednesday afternoon at the Nebraska State Penitentiary, said Dawn-Renee Smith, communications director for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.
While the cause of his death has not been determined, Shupe was being treated for a long-term medical condition, Smith said.
Shupe, 49, was serving five to 10 years for second-degree assault from Thurston County. His sentence began in December 2017 and he had a projected release date in 2021.
A grand jury will conduct an investigation, which is standard procedure for the death of an inmate in the custody of the Department of Correctional Services.
