A convicted murderer died Wednesday after being treated for a long-term medical issue at the Nebraska State Penitentiary, according to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.

Michael Juranek, 68, was pronounced dead at 8:02 p.m. at a Lincoln hospital, the department said in a news release.

Juranek was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder and additional time for using a weapon to commit a felony in the killing of his 52-year-old roommate, Jimmy McBride, in 2011.

His cause of death has not been determined and will be investigated by a grand jury as is required by state law when a Nebraska prisoner dies.
