A Lincoln police officer was assaulted and suffered a broken leg Thursday while transporting a man to the Crisis Center, Officer Angela Sands said.

The man had been contacted by law enforcement early Thursday when an officer observed him walking in the street near 48th and Fremont streets. He refused to move to the sidewalk and told an officer he had gone through a recent breakup. Officers found him to be suicidal and intoxicated, took him into emergency protective custody and transported him to the Bridge Behavioral Health for detox, Sands said.

Detox called police Thursday afternoon to say the man could be transferred to the Crisis Center, but he became agitated and fought with officers when they tried to place him in a room. During the struggle, the officer's leg was broken. The injury will require surgery.

The man being transported was not injured and was left at the Crisis Center.
