When you hear the term “kitten season,” you might think of spring. And it is true -- a lot of kittens are born in the spring, but kittens are born year-round. Although fall may be just around the corner, The Cat House has many kittens available for adoption now.
You may have heard of a large project near the western Nebraska town of Chappell at the end of May, when a coalition of several groups, including Lincoln's Joining Forces Saving Lives, worked to spay or neuter about 100 adult cats. The acreage owner was caring for the cats as well as possible, but the situation had gotten out of hand because the cats were not spayed or neutered.
There were 15 young kittens on the acreage; these kittens made the long trip to Lincoln and into the care of The Cat House. Thanks to the generosity of several foster homes, the “Chappell kittens” regained their health and are now available for adoption. Most are at The Cat House facility at 3633 O St.; some are in foster homes. You can apply to adopt at thecathouse.org/adopt. One (or more) kittens would be a great addition to your home!
Getting these kittens, as well as many other kittens and cats, ready to be adopted is not inexpensive. Fundraisers, like a booth at the Haymarket Farmers’ Market, go a long way toward covering veterinary and other expenses. The Cat House had another successful season at the Farmers’ Market this year. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to restock their catnip stick supply or became first-time buyers of these popular, volunteer-made toys. A full 100 percent of the profits help keep the cats at the shelter healthy and happy. Catnip sticks, pet beds, t-shirts and jewelry are also available year-round at The Cat House.
The Cat House is open to the public Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. TCH is a 501(c)(3) organization; contributions may be tax-deductible. TCH is funded by donations and adoption fees and staffed by volunteers.
