Lincoln families are invited to celebrate national "Kids to Parks Day" at the Party on the Plaza from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at Union Plaza, 21st and P streets.
The free event is part of an effort by the National Park Trust to encourage communities to plan special events for Kids to Parks Day in local, state and national parks across the country.
"The national observance of Kids to Parks Day is the perfect opportunity to kick off the seventh year of our local Party in the Parks and third year of Play in the Parks events," said Melissa Lindeman, Parks and Recreation program monitor. "By encouraging families to experience arts and recreation activities in our beautiful public parks, we promote creativity, health and wellness and a feeling of community."
Entertainment and art activities for families include a boardwalk of games, chalk art, mud sculpting, face painting and balloon twisting.
The performance schedule is as follows:
• 4:15 p.m. – McPhee Drumtastic
• 4:45 p.m. – Goodrich Step Club
• 5 p.m. – Calvert Coyote Chorus and Karaoke Ukuleles
• 5:30 p.m. – Three Battles GoJu Ryo Karate
• 6 p.m. – Chimwemwe Dancers
• 6:30 p.m. – Rubber Ducky Race
The Party in the Parks events began in 2013 to provide free community arts events in Union Plaza. In 2014, the Union Plaza events became Party on the Plaza, and the Party in the Parks initiative expanded to include other free performing and visual arts events in Lincoln's parks throughout the summer months.
