Shirley M. Ohles, 91, died on the morning of Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2018. She was born on August 25, 1927, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Shirley was the daughter of Erling and Amelia (Peterson) Sorbo. She attended public schools in Minneapolis and was a 1948 graduate of the University of Minnesota. On August 7, 1948, Shirley married John F. Ohles. Their marriage brought them four children. John died in 1988. Shirley took great joy in visits with her children, grandchildren, other family, and friends. She was coauthor of Private Colleges and Universities and Public Colleges and Universities (with John F. Ohles) and Biographical Dictionary of Modern American Educators (with Frederik Ohles and John G. Ramsay).
Shirley was a devoted wife and mother. Surviving are her loving and grateful children: Frederik Ohles (Rosemary) of Lincoln, Janet Ohles of Northampton, Pennsylvania, Margaret Black of Sandusky, Ohio, and son-in-law Frank Kooistra of Olmsted Falls, Ohio. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Kevin (Aubrey) Black, Christopher (Shannon) Black, Andrea Ohles, Erika Ohles, Sean Black, and Nathaniel Kooistra and one great-grandchild, Leo Black. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and in 2011 her youngest child, Judith Kooistra.
The family expresses its deep appreciation to the staff of Parkvue Healthcare Center of Sandusky, Ohio, where Shirley resided for the last decade of her life.
Burial will be private at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. A memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, at the Kent (Ohio) Presbyterian Church, 1456 East Summit Street. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials are suggested to Kent Social Services, Kent Presbyterian Church, the Activity Program of Parkvue Healthcare Center, or the donor's choice.
