John Henry Fischer, 92, of Columbia, Mo., and long time resident of Lincoln, passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at a family member's residence in Missouri. He was born on April 2, 1927, in Shanghai, China, to Rev. John August Fischer and Martha Marie (Baden) Fischer. John was born to Lutheran missionary parents in Shanghai, China in 1927, and they left China for the U.S. in 1930. He grew up in West Ely, Mo., and attended St. Paul's High School and College, Concordia, Mo., 1942 – 1947. He attended Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo., 1947 - 1948; then transferred to Concordia Teachers College, Seward, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1950. He married Edith Martha Louise Ziegelbein, Dunksburg, Mo., May 14, 1950. He obtained a Master of Education in 1970 from the University of Nebraska.
He spent his life as a teacher, and principal, in both parochial and public schools, including teaching at Dawes Elementary School in Lincoln. He served as director of Christian Education at Faith Lutheran Church in Lincoln. In later life, he is remembered for his prayer petitioning, and he died in faith.
He is survived by his sons, John Henry Fischer Jr., New Knoxville, Ohio; and James Daniel Fischer, Columbia, Mo.; and his daughters Rebecca Sue (Fischer) Hartman, Davenport, Iowa; and Mary Fischer Murphy, Warsaw, Mo. Grandchildren: Chelsea (Hartman) Schorg, Chad Hartman, John Fischer III, Carolyn (Fischer) Corbett. Siblings: Margaret (Fischer) Wilkie; Bill (“Buddy”) Fischer; and many nephews and nieces. Preceded in death by his wife, Edith Martha Louise (Ziegelbein) Fischer; and parents, John and Martha Fischer.
