Jill K. Oestmann
June 15, 2019
Fiercely loyal and loving, Jill K. (Gies) Oestmann, 54, of Lincoln left this world in the company of her family after a brief battle with cancer. Born and raised in Lincoln, she and her husband John Oestmann raised two talented and wonderful children, Morgan and Audra. Family was of the upmost importance to Jill. She and John married right after graduating from high school and were off to England. John was stationed at RAF Lakenheath while Jill was a chef at the Officer's Club. Being somewhat isolated in England, Jill and John came to rely a great deal on each other and have since continued to tackle things together. This came to include: gardening, binge watching "Game of Thrones" on their patio, co-coaching soccer and speech teams, spoiling their dogs, and home projects (everything but plumbing - they referred to plumbers as 'marriage counselors'). Jill loved and quietly but fervently supported her family, those privileged to be her friends, and her students. Jill began teaching at Lincoln Southeast High School in 1991. Her leadership in the district and at LSE was instrumental in improving reading instruction. As a reading teacher, her skill was pivotal in countless students finding meaning in books, but more importantly, rediscovering an appreciation for reading. She did not just care about their performance on tests. She knew her students and cared deeply about them as individuals. Jill had a way with challenging students, and they were always at the center of her work. Her supportive, genuine, tough-love approach made her connect with students who hadn't previously found success in the classroom. When she would run into past students, their comments always centered around the idea that Mrs. Oestmann believed in them when no one else did. Jill did everything with a determined, competitive spirit. In her youth, she was an amazing dancer, an Aqua Link at LHS, taught synchronized swimming in England, and was an assistant coach at LSE. Jill was a pool shark in college, the neighborhood champion of Texas Hold 6Em, and the host of cooking contests she usually won. She loved podcasts, was a voracious reader, and a hearty competitor in Words With Friends. Her spirit and laugh filled the hearts of all who were lucky enough to have her in their lives. Greatly missed by her husband John Oestmann; children Morgan and Audra Oestmann; parents Dave and Julie (Sampson) Gies; brother Craig (Ginger) Gies; sister Sara (Bill) Bevans, mother-in-law Mary (Goldberg) Oestmann, brother-in-law Carl (Renae) Oestmann, sister-in-law Irene (Paul) Maueussen, many much loved nieces, nephews, and extended family, dogs Frieda and Lisa. Preceded in death by several very lucky dogs: Fritz, Timber, Dakoda, Uta, and Gretta, cat Uma.
