She graduated with a bachelors' degree in psychology from the University of Iowa. In 1951, she married her husband of 67 years, Everett Evnen. Elaine and Everett had four children.

Elaine was unceasingly active in the PTA as her children were growing up. She was a Cub Scout den leader. She was trained in the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching reading to dyslexic children, with whom she worked as a volunteer tutor. She was the president of Tifereth Israel Synagogue, and a member of Hadassah and the Tifereth Israel Sisterhood. She was the treasurer of the Lincoln Jewish Welfare Federation for many years.

She kept the books for Everett's new venture, Lincoln Poultry, in the early going. She held a private pilot license. Elaine had a deep appreciation for the arts. She was a member of the Nebraska Art Association board for ten years. She volunteered at the Haydon Gallery, located in Lincoln's Haymarket.

She will be most remembered for her unfailing caring and kindness toward others. She opened her home to all. She was a marvelous cook and baker, and a gracious hostess. She was a ready and genuine listener. When Elaine spoke with you, you were the only person in the world.
