Lyle Dean Sittler, 74, of rural Martell, passed away January 29, 2017, surrounded by family. Lyle was born October 24, 1942, in Lincoln, to Harvey Clifford and Vera Adelaide (Wissenburg) Sittler. He married Alice Lauritzen on June 13, 1965, in Weeping Water.

Lyle attended Crete High School where he was active in student government, music programs and multiple sports. Lyle graduated from Crete in 1960 and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on a full football scholarship. Lyle was the starting center, served as co-captain in 1964 and received many honors. Lyle was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Crete High Hall of Fame in 2013.

Lyle was a teacher and coach from 1965-1980 in Lawrence, Kan., and at East Jr. Sr. High in Lincoln. Lyle returned to the family farm in 1980 where he raised crops, Polled Herefords & Holsteins. He also worked tirelessly to leave the land in better condition than how he found it.

Lyle was active in his community and his church. Lyle served on the Crete School Board, the Lancaster County Extension Board and as an advisor for the Nebraska Jr Polled Hereford Association for a number of years. Lyle was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Crete where he sang in the choir, helped lead the youth group and tended the flowers in the garden with his wife, Alice.

Lyle enjoyed gardening, baking, spending time with family and friends including his four grandchildren who helped keep him young. Lyle always had a smile that would light up the world and a laugh to share with anyone around.

Lyle is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Alice, daughter Kristen Eggerling (Todd), daughter Jana, daughter Meghan (Molly Murphy), sister Ruthelen, grandchildren Dylan and Levi Hafer, and Barrett and Lauren Eggerling. Lyle is also survived by countless friends as Lyle welcomed all into his life with open arms. Lyle is preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of life is planned for 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, at Grace United Methodist Church in Crete. Family will also greet his many friends from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, February 10, at Grace United Methodist Church. The family will be wearing Husker red in honor of Lyle and encourages all to honor him in that manner if they desire.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the family for future designation. Contributions can be sent to the family or to Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home 6800 S. 14th Street, Lincoln.
