Samuel Gordon Mattox, 80, West Des Moines, Iowa, passed away Tuesday (4/20/04). He was surrounded by his loving family. Gordon, as he was known to most who knew him, was born June 19, 1923. He was born and raised around Tecumseh. He graduated from Tecumseh High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Mary Anne Brown, to whom he was married for more than 55 years. After attending University of Nebraska, Gordon worked in agricultural sales. He resided in Lincoln for 25 years, moving to Des Moines in 1999.
In Lincoln, Gordon was a member of the Masonic Lodge 19; Order of the Eastern Star 148; Sesostris Shrine, for which he was Shrine clown; American Legion; and VFW. He also was a member of the Elks Club, Falls City.
Survivors: daughters, Tammy Fastenau, West Des Moines, Carolyn Yeomans, Chicago; three grandchildren; one great-grandson. Preceded in death by: parents, Ellis and Neva; wife, Mary Anne; sister, Donna Merkle, Peoria, Ill.
