Chambers targets bankers

In debate Wednesday over a bill (LB750) from Sen. Matt Williams of Gothenburg changing the requirements of bank lenders in releasing liens, Omaha Sen. Ernie Chambers rose to needle one of his favorite topics: bankers.

But Sen. Laura Ebke of Crete rose to the defense of the banker/senators in the Legislature, and in the process, briefly referenced a spat with the state GOP last year over free screenings of “It’s a Wonderful Life” she offered for her District 32 constituents.

“It’s one of my favorite movies,” the former Republican said with a smirk, describing how the movie draws a stark contrast between good bankers (the George Baileys) and bad bankers (the Mr. Potters).

“The three bankers we’ve got (in the Legislature) are much more George Bailey than Mr. Potter,” Ebke said.
