At the core of Lincoln Community Foundation’s work, we want to connect donors to the causes they care about most. Donor advised funds (DAFs) are tools we offer that are gaining in popularity due to the most recent tax law changes. DAFs allow you to make a charitable gift to the fund and take a deduction one year, then recommend grants to your favorite organizations from your fund at the times you choose.
Locally, we’ve learned that another motivation for donors is a match. Imagine being able to give $1,000 to your favorite nonprofit or house of worship, and someone else will add an extra $100 to the gift. The impact of your action has a ripple effect.
Thanks to a gift from Bill and Marilyn Cintani, new DAFs opened at the Lincoln Community Foundation will receive a 10 percent match. As match funds are available, new DAFs can receive up to $1,000.
Bill Cintani has served on the LCF board, and he’s seen the impact that a match can have on encouraging donations. Our Give to Lincoln Day is the best example. This giving event has been able to leverage a match investment of $2.05 million to produce $20 million in donations over 7 years.
Inspired by this concept of leverage, Bill and Marilyn have pledged $50,000 from their DAF to serve as match dollars for new DAFs established at the Lincoln Community Foundation.
“Today, DAFs are probably the simplest, most flexible structure to create and maintain philanthropy,” Bill said.
LCF does the back-office work and record-keeping, and verifies the eligibility of all recommended grants. There is no minimum amount to start a fund and no fees, allowing more benefit to return to the community.
“It really is better than a personal foundation,” Bill said.
In addition to the Cintani match for new DAFs, LCF is offering a match on gifts to endowment funds. Endowments create permanent support for your favorite organization or house of worship. You may give a gift of any size to an existing active endowment held at LCF, and that gift will receive a 10 percent match. Or, with a minimum gift of $10,000, you may create your own unique endowed fund, such as a scholarship fund, designated fund supporting one or more organizations, or a field of interest fund to support your favorite cause.
