Our November L Magazine cover features AshLea Allberry, co-founder of the 100s of Lincoln Women Who Care group, and Kevin Schneider, co-founder of 100s of Lincoln Men Who Care.
Combined, the two groups have donated $330,000 to two dozen nonprofits in Lincoln. The men’s group was formed a little over three years ago when Schneider and fellow attorney Stan Beeder requested information from a 100s of Men Who Care group in Iowa City, Iowa. They liked what they heard and recruited 16 other co-founders to start the Lincoln men's group in May 2015.
After the initial meetings, the two men told AshLea Allberry of Lincoln how the men’s group was benefiting nonprofits and suggested forming a women's group. Allberry liked the idea and contacted her friend Brett Ebert, who helped recruit 19 additional co-founders, and the 100s of Lincoln Women Who Care group was born in October 2015.
The groups are designed to appeal to Lincoln residents who want to give back to the community but don't have a lot of time in their busy lives. Each person who attends a quarterly group meeting donates $100, which is given to a local nonprofit selected later that evening by the group. Attendees nominate local nonprofits, three are picked at random, three members pitch why their nominated nonprofit deserves the group’s support, and then the entire group votes to determine which nonprofit receives the donation, which totals $10,000 or more.
Group members enjoy networking and camaraderie with complimentary cocktails and hors d'oeuvres paid for by local sponsoring businesses. Meetings are over within 100 minutes. Read nonprofit directors' comments of appreciation and more details about the nonprofits that have benefited in my cover story on this website titled "100s of Women and Men Who Care."

Around town …
While covering the fourth annual Inspire-Celebrating Women's Leadership Awards event at Pinnacle Bank Arena last month, I saw several members of the 100s of Lincoln Women Who Care group in attendance. The annual event honors local women for both their professional achievements and their contributions to the community. Ameritas CEO JoAnn Martin was named Woman of the Year, and 11 other women were honored in various categories. See details and photos in our article titled "Martin named Woman of the Year at 4th annual Inspire awards event" on this website.
Walt Disney fans will enjoy our travel stories about Disney's hometown in Marceline, Missouri, and Disney World in Orlando, Florida, also on this website.
